National broadband network actually works?

The Australian government is implicating a nationwide internet network designed to connect all Australians to high speed internet. A big part of this scheme is getting it to every household in Australia. Anyone that knows basic world geography knows just how big that is as only about 65% of all Australians living in major cities which leave roughly 10 million people living in rural areas often hours away from the closest town. Unfortunately the result of the federal election this November will have a huge impact on the integrity of the scheme as both major parties want to do something different with the scheme. Currently the Labour party is promising all Australians will have access to around 1000mbs download speed and 400mbs upload speed which is a huge improvement to the national average of around 5mbs download and 50kbs upload. So why is this so important to us? Because with so many small businesses operating in rural areas now it’s important to have internet that they can trust and have fast access to as often they will deal with overseas clients. How is it good for the average Joe? The average download time for a HD movie from iTunes is roughly 2 hours (2.5 GB at 900kbs) Now imagine being able to download this in a matter of seconds or talk to relatives overseas in high definition video calls, everyone will befit from it somehow from schools, hospitals, traffic management and even just your average favourite T.V show download. The only problem with the NBN currently is the rollout process. As of march this year they were 125,000 homes behind on their installation process which was about a6 month setback on it. Not to mention the discovery of hundreds of old asbestos pits located in the Telstra ADSL2 interchanges. Basically everyone will benefit from it at some point whether they think it’s a waste of money or not. Embrace the digital age Australia, join the rest of the world.

Steam sales, deal or no deal?

Recently steam held their annual spring sale racking in millions of dollars in revenue from customers. This is not a bad thing at all, in fact it’s great for valve as a company and the gaming industry as a whole. Now, let’s go deeper into these sales. Steam has a reputation for seriously lowering prices on games during their sales, for example a triple A title such as Bioshock infinite (release recently) was slashed an entire 55%. Sales like this not only attract a lot of customers but also deplete customers bank accounts. We all know that feeling when we bought something we didn’t need and regret it later when you need money. That’s basically what steam sales are, you buy a crap load of cheap games you aren’t interested in but buy them because they are $2 and after about twenty or thirty you notice the bills rack up (especially if your dollar is worth less than the USD) I think just about every gamer gets sucked into one of these sales and regrets it, or completely takes advantage of it and legitimately enjoys all 30 games they bought. Minecraft or Minecrap?

Millions of people play Minecraft, A simple game which no ever thought would be popular. Everyone has heard of Minecraft and most people own it or play it. Minecraft is the latest gaming craze on PC and Xbox 360. Despite looks, Minecraft is not simple! Maybe I’m just simple minded but the last time I checked it wasn’t so damn complicated. Now what I don’t understand is people that hate Minecraft because of the way it looks, Yes it looks blocky and chunky but… duh its Minecraft! Its supposed to look like that otherwise it wouldn’t make any sense at all. Speaking of not making sense people have started making mods which include perfect spheres in the game (just incase it didn’t hurt your head already) 

Microsoft Slowly Winning Back My Trust

Although I am a long way from trusting the once superior company in my book, Microsofts recent policy to remove update fees for developers gives me hope that they are moving to a more indie developer friendly system. As the previously policy stood, developers needed to pay 20,000 per update and other fees just to publish on the network. These fees have been removed to allow for easier development for smaller studios with lower funds.

A system that was once used to prevent game developers from releasing glitched and broken games, it has become a giant road block of the less fortunate developer. As Sony has always had easier development barriers which provided better, and more, indie games on the PSN, this step may help XBLA even out the playing field. Maybe they are fading away from greed or maybe they just see a flaw in their system. But no…

Multitasking level: Pro

This guy takes multitasking to the next level. He plays 36 separate World of Warcraft accounts at the same time. He pays around five thousand dollars a year in membership fees and even raids by himself (WoW guys will know how hard that would be) Could you imagine playing 36 different characters at once? Holy crap i cant get my tiny nerd brain around that. Im amazed more than anything.  Image
